Your home is more than your physical address, it is your personal, intimate space where you find safety from the outside world. Your home is your emotional safety net, your battery recharge, and your base from which you venture into the world. Creating a space where you can successfully revive your mind, body, and spirit is paramount, especially with how harsh the outside world has become.
There are a million articles that will tell you "how" to create a sanctuary in your home, but just as we are all individuals, we all have individual meanings for the word "sanctuary." What would benefit you the most is to keep your definition of sanctuary in the forefront of your mind as you transform your surroundings and bring it to life.
No one can tell you what colors to paint, what fabrics to buy, where to put your décor to create a space that will reflect *you,* only you can make those decisions.
What I will do here is give you some things to consider as you are creating the space that makes you exhale with relief when you enter the door.
Clear the Clutter
Too much clutter can cause the energy of the space to become stagnant. If your space can't breathe then the energy cannot move, there is no motion to keep the flow of energy going. Clutter causes energy roadblocks.
Try to reduce clutter as much as you can. You don't have to go minimalist, trust me I tried it and did not enjoy the cold energy I created, just remove the excess that may cause those roadblocks.
Delight your Senses
When thinking of what should be included (and excluded) from your space, think about all your senses. What do you like to look at? What colors make you feel most rested? Or most rejuvenated?
What smells soothe your soul? Smell is a strong trigger so stick with smells that make you feel happy and safe.
What fabrics feel the best to you? Would satin or leather feel better after a hard day in the outside world? What would feel the best to be enveloped in? What sounds bring a sense of calm? Sound can bring you peace and can have the added benefit of clearing energy from the space.

Light the Way
Lighting can make a huge impact on how your space feels. Keep the different types of lighting in mind as you are transforming your space. From accent lighting, to task lighting, to ambient lighting, it's easy to change how a space feels with just a flip of a switch.
Find the lighting that makes your space feel comforting and welcoming. Experiment with different fixtures as well as different temperatures of light bulbs. Don't overlook natural light, in fact, maximize it! If your view ruins the mellow mood you are attempting to create, find sheer curtains or window film that allows the most light in while obscuring that harsh outside world.
Bring the Outside In
But only the good stuff! Bringing natural elements into your space can have a positive effect on your mood, though odds are if you are here, you are already doing this (how many rocks did you collect today?). Find a way to honor those pieces of nature that speak to you while you are out in the world by creating space for them in your home. A glass jar by the door to collect those rocks you bring home can be beautiful to look at and also create positive energy from the happiness they bring you.
It is also okay to return things to nature. If you find your rocks, or plants, or sticks, etc are just too much for your space and overwhelming you instead of bringing you peace, it is okay to return them to Mother Earth.
Find Your Vibe
Really it all comes down to creating a space that reflects you. Who you are, who you want to be, how you want to live your life, and what makes you happy. That may seem overwhelming at first, but just as you are an ever growing and changing soul, so will your sanctuary be. And that is not only a good thing, but an amazing thing to be a part of.
Allow the energy of your sanctuary to ebb and flow with the rhythms of your life. Allow it to breathe with you. When your energy changes, when your life changes, change things in your space to reflect that.

Let go of things that do not represent the you that you want to be. Things that do not bring you peace, calm, and renew. Don't let things in your space weigh you down emotionally or physically.
Use the colors you love, play the music you love, inhale the scents that have meaning to you. This is your sanctuary, make it reflect you. Whether the you is a singular soul or the you is a houseful of different souls, follow the vibe that brings personal peace and emotional wellbeing.
Everyone's sanctuary will look and feel different, that is the beauty of being a unique individual. All that matters is how your space makes you feel before you open that door and head out to face the world, and how it makes you feel the moment you step back in and exhale.
