Creating Your Spring Altar

Writer: ElleElle

Woohoo! Spring is here! Right now (in the Northern Hemisphere) you can feel the earth waking from her long slumber. Rebirth is in the air and in our souls.

Now is the perfect time to make sure your altar reflects not only the earth's stage of renewal but your own as well.

My altar space is rather large (I use the entire top of my entertainment center), but your space can be as large or small as you would like. And it is totally up to you if you swap out everything on it as the seasons change or just swap out a few elements. I personally have items that are permanent on my altar that provide a "base" and swap a few things out as the wheel turns.

Before creating a representation of Spring, you first need to clear away the previous altar decorations. This is also a perfect time to clean the surface and any items you are putting back. I use moon water as my cleansing agent when changing from one altar to the next.

Here are some things that you may want to include on your altar:

  • Flowers: Daffodils, tulips, and roses are all great options. Real would be great, but fake works too. I will usually put some silk flowers around my altar but also have a vase to switch out fresh cut flowers every week or so. You could even put your seed starters on your altar to give your home grown flowers a magickal start. Bonus if you use eggshells as your container for your seedlings.

  • Crystals: Citrine, Amber, Green Aventurine, Carnelian. Anything that you connect with that resonates starting fresh, or new beginnings. You can put them all together in a bowl and make it a focal point for your altar or spread them throughout. I like to spread them around my altar so there is a chance every time you look at the altar you will see a different crystal. Check out our beautiful Citrine Druzy pieces!

  • Candles: With spring scents if you are going to light them, and in spring colors. Light greens, pale blues, yellows and purples. Candles (even if you don't light them) are a great way to bring your desired feeling into your altar space. I have white candles that remain on my altar all year, and a few candle holders that I replace the candles in depending on the season.

  • Deities: If you so choose. I love putting an images of Persephone and Demeter on my spring altar. I've always loved the story of Persephone being abducted to the underworld by Hades and Demeter's grief over loosing her child bringing growth on the earth to a stop. When Persephone is granted permission to go back to her mother, even for a short time, the world springs back to life and grows again.

  • Any current workings and spells you are crafting for the season. Place them on your altar as a reminder while you are crafting them. For example, I currently have a dollar bill art piece that we were gifted that serves as a part of the abundance spell my husband and I are crafting.

The important part is that your Spring Altar feel reflective of the season as well as reflective of you.

Have fun with it, embrace the childlike wonder Spring brings. Everything is new, fresh, growing. Create your Spring Altar and celebrate Mother Earth's new beginning as well as your own!
