The Magick of the In-Between: Embracing Transition in Witchcraft

Writer's picture: ElleElle

You know that feeling when winter is almost gone, but spring isn’t quite here yet? The snow is melting, the air smells different, and you can just sense something shifting? That, my friend, is the magick of the in-between—that liminal space where we’re not fully in the old season, but not yet in the new.

And let’s be real—transitions are weird and sometimes uncomfortable. Whether it’s a change in the seasons, a big life shift, or even just an internal nudge that something is shifting, it can feel like you’re navigating in the unknown. But here’s the thing: this space is powerful. It’s where transformation takes shape, where we get to set intentions, and where magick loves to swirl.

So, let’s talk about how to actually embrace the in-between instead of resisting it.

Why Liminal Spaces Hold So Much Magick

Think about those moments in life that just feel extra magical: Twilight and dawn, the mystical space between day and night; When seasons begin to shift, and you can feel the next season just over the horizon; When your life transitions, the space between “I’m ready for a change” and actually taking the first step; And when your emotions transition, when you are not quite over something but you are not longer stuck in the emotion of it.

These moments are filled with possibility, they can feel uncertain but they hold so much potential. The potential of a new day, a new season, a new life.

Rituals & Spells for Navigating the In-Between

If you’re feeling uncertain, stuck, or restless, these simple practices can help:

Candle Magick for Clarity

Because sometimes, we just need a little light to show us the way.

  1. Grab a white, blue, or lavender candle—colors that help with transitions.

  2. Carve a simple word into the wax that represents what you want to call in (like clarity, courage, or flow).

  3. Light it and sit watching the flame for a few minutes, letting it guide you forward.

Flowing Water Ritual

Perfect for when you need to let go and move with change.

  1. Find a stream, river, or even a bowl of water.

  2. Whisper your fears or hesitations into a small stone.

  3. Drop it into the water and watch it drift away, symbolizing release. If using a small bowl, imagine the ripples extending beyond the confines of the bowl itself.

  4. Cup the water in your hands and set a new intention before letting it flow.

Planting Intentions Spell

Want to grow into your next phase? What better way that to work with seeds!

  1. Take a herb seed (basil, rosemary, or lavender are great choices).

  2. Hold it in your hands and speak your intention into it.

  3. Plant it in soil and water it, knowing that as it grows, so does your transformation.

Honoring the “Not Quite Winter, Not Yet Spring” Energy

The beauty of this in-between time and energy happens when you let yourself linger here. Instead of rushing into the next season, the next change, we take our time and enjoy the space we are in. Acknowledge it, nurture it, and embrace it.

Take a walk and make note of how the earth is slowly transitioning - the ice melting, buds forming, the way the air smells. Spend some of this in-between time journaling. What changes do you feel inside? What is ready to bloom? Try working with breathwork to clear out any mental fog and make space for what’s coming. Listen to the sound of the world around you, the melting ice, dripping rain, rushing water. Use meditation or sleep sounds if you aren’t in a place where you can naturally hear these things.

The in-between time is a sacred time. It reminds us that change takes time, things do not happen overnight. That just because we can’t see the end results now doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

So if you are feeling a little lost right now, try not to stress too much. Remember, you don’t have to have all the answers right now, and you are exactly where you need to be.
