Shadow work is a practice rooted in the idea that we all have parts of ourselves that we suppress, ignore, or simply don’t acknowledge. These hidden aspects—our "shadow"—are often linked to past experiences, emotions, or traits that we find too difficult to confront. However, by engaging in shadow work, we can bring these parts of ourselves into the light, leading to healing, personal growth, and deeper self-awareness.
What is the Shadow?
The shadow represents the aspects of ourselves that we have buried deep within us. These could be things like fears, insecurities, or unhealed emotional wounds. Oftentimes, the shadow forms during childhood as a result of societal, familial, or personal expectations. For example, if a child is taught that expressing anger is bad, they may suppress those feelings, which can later resurface in unhealthy ways.
The purpose of shadow work is to face these hidden parts of ourselves, recognize them, and accept them without judgment.
Why Is Shadow Work Important?
Ignoring our shadow doesn’t make it disappear—it only grows stronger in the background, influencing our thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. Shadow work helps us understand and integrate these hidden aspects so we can:
Heal emotional wounds
Build better relationships
Develop greater self-awareness
Break unhealthy patterns
By acknowledging the shadow, we begin to understand our true selves more deeply, and we give ourselves the chance to live a more balanced and authentic life.
How to Start Shadow Work
Shadow work doesn’t need to be intimidating. Here are three simple ways to begin:
Journaling: Write down your thoughts and feelings without censorship. Ask yourself, "What parts of myself am I afraid to show others?" or "What emotions do I avoid?"
Meditation: Take time to sit in silence and focus on your emotions. Allow feelings to surface without pushing them away.
Tarot or Oracle Cards: These tools can offer insight into your shadow by prompting introspection. Use spreads designed for uncovering hidden truths or unresolved emotions.
Shadow work is not about fixing or perfecting yourself—it’s about embracing all of who you are, even the parts that feel uncomfortable. The more we explore our shadows, the more we grow into our authentic selves, free of judgment and fear. The path to self-healing may be challenging, but it is also deeply rewarding. Blessed Be!
